PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Impractical Spaces publication based in Grand Rapids, Michigan documents artist-run projects that have happened in Grand Rapids beginning in 1967 onward. The publication project includes working with emergent, fleeting, nomadic and more established artist-run projects. In partnership with long-time residents the archive serves as a taste of artist-run projects developed within the context of Grand Rapids, Michigan and how those projects have changed and shifted over time.

Partner Biography

Dulcee Boehm is an artist based in the Midwest. In her performative and object-based work, particular attention is paid to country culture, bodies, farm work and food. Boehm has exhibited in a variety of contexts from the former Mess Hall in Chicago, Illinois to an old cattle barn in Grinnell, Iowa. She co-founded a nomadic residency & exhibition program called Say Uncle in 2015, and the Beyond Alternatives symposium which focused on artist-led projects outside large metropolitan areas. Boehm is currently a Visiting Professor at Grand Valley State University in the Visual & Media Arts Department.
